Week 3: Reading Diary A

Sita seems convinced that there’s something wrong with Lakshmana when he doesn’t immediately rush off to save Rama
Sita calls Rama her lord
Sita threatens suicide to get Lakshmana to leave—a bit of an overreaction
“Dharma alone should protect her” pg 91
Sanyasi—what is it? Ravana calls himself one at first
Sadhus—Ravana calls himself one before he reveals his true self
Ravana had been imprisoned until he begged for mercy
There is a curse on Ravana that if he touches a woman without her consent he’ll die
Jatayu predicted Ravana’s fall
Veena=some form of instrument, ravana plays it
Ravana has an infallible sword, the ability to fly
Lakshmana was the Great Serpent Adisesha in human form; Vishnu and Adisesha were very close
Hanuman is also called Anjaneya
When an opponent approached Vali, he would take half of their strength automatically
Who is Yama? (pg 100) the god of death (pg107)
Hanuman’s father foretold his service to Vishnu/Rama
Rama shot an arrow through 7 trees, 7 worlds, 7 seas, and all things 7 and the arrow returned to its quiver (paraphrase pg 102)
Why do they have to vanquish Vali? Why can’t they try to get his help through talking first?
“If your brothers, at any time, blame Sugreeva as one who had engineered the death of his brother, please explain to them that Sugreeva has only engineered my salvation”—Vali to Rama
Rama was tormented by the rainy season; everything reminded him of Sita and their separation
Sugreeva doesn’t show up at the end of the rainy season at first; Rama threatens to kill him and every other monkey if he does not come and help him find Sita
Sugreeva was partying it up and had no clue what was going on; when reminded of Rama’s suffering, he felt guilty and promised to never drink alcohol again
Hanuman was cursed into not knowing just how knowledgeable and powerful he is by his father--does he have more powers that we don't know of yet?
